General Information About Bosses

At the end of every dungeon (off Level 3 in Dew Valley Forest and Level 7 in all other dungeons) will be found the Boss Lair. There are several distinct differences between the Boss Lair and the main dungeon levels. The Boss Lair is generally a much smaller map. The Boss will be well guarded, often by Champions and Heroes or by large groups of mobs. The Boss himself (or herself) will be an immensely strong mob and very hard to defeat. Upon defeating the Boss, the Boss Gate will open to the Treasure Room and a teleporter to the next dungeon.

There are two general approaches to Boss fighting. A solo character, working through the dungeon level by level until reaching the lair, will usually go in for the first time at Normal difficulty to get acquainted with the Lair, the guards, and the Boss. After defeating the Boss at normal it can be reset and tried at progressively harder difficulties.

It is very common for groups to Farm Bosses. This usually means going in at INSANE! difficulty for the major loot drops, reseting and returning again and again. Certain bosses are more suitable for farming and this is noted below.

Some players who have bling gnomes usually bring the whole mob and boss together and kill them in one spot so the bling gnome might have a chance to produce something awesome.

Boss Reset (Ghosting)

Many of the Bosses have a special characteristic. There is an area, usually near the portal, that they cannot enter. As they approach it, they will "ghost" and go back to their starting point, also resetting their health back to 100%. In many Boss Lairs it is possible to take advantage of this characteristic to split the Boss from his or her guards.

Dew Valley Rattle Tooth, Boss of Dew Valley Forest

Dew Valley Rattle Tooth

Boss of:  Dew Valley Forest
Spells:
Fire Resist:
Ice Resist:
Shadow Resist:
Poison Resist:
Divine Resist:

This is the very first Boss fight that most players will encounter. The Lair is a Wasteland Layout and a few mobs will be encountered on the way to meeting the Boss. Dew Valley Rattle Tooth is usually accompanied by Whisker Blademasters and two large Wolf Champions named Rat's Best Friend. All the basics of a good Boss fight can be learned right here!

First of all, the two wolves of can be a fairly formidable challenge for a low level character. Rattle Tooth himself is pretty strong. You will soon learn the meaning of the term "spam pots"! You will probably need to keep a very close eye on your Health and Mana bars, and use potions to renew them several times during the fight.

Secondly you will learn to adapt your tactics to the situation. In this Lair, a solo fighter just charges and hacks, watching his health. Solo Rangers or Mages will have a difficult time keeping away to use ranged attacks, and may have to close with the Boss and his guards close up. A mage will want to use his AoE spell as often as it cools down, and a ranger will benefit from an AoE too.

The third thing you will hopefully learn here is the advantage of friends! A group can do very well here, with the standard "meat shield" strategy of fighters closing with the monsters and keeping them occupied while relying on armor and defense rating for protection. Meanwhile the mages and rangers stand back and blast with their ranged spells.

By the time you are able to deal with Dew Valley Rattle Tooth at INSANE! Difficulty, you will have learned a lot about Boss fighting!

Sissirat, Boss of Algernon

Sissirat

Boss of:  Algernon
Spells:
  • Poison Bolt
  • Summon Poison Broodling
  • Drain Poison Resist
Fire Resist:  No
Ice Resist:  No
Shadow Resist:  Low
Poison Resist:  Good
Divine Resist:  No

Sissirat is accompanied by Rattle Toe and several Toxic Venomspitters, and spawns Whisker Broodlings. The layout of her Lair gives you a chance to go to the corner and scout a bit before rushing in. It is vital to use Poison Resistance just before you attack. Try to locate Sissirat right away, or if not her then Rattle Toe. Some people prefer to go for Rattle Toe first because of the melee damage he can do. Others go right for Sissirat and simply absorb what Rattle Toe deals out. Low level characters (who are mostly the ones who come here) will probably have to spam pots.

The Basic starting skills work pretty well here. A Fighter can use Butcher against Sissi and Rattle Toe, and Righteous Stomp will keep the little ones away. A mage with Fire Bolt and Shadow Lightning can use them alternately (see Two Button Mage) with excellent effect. A Ranger has a bit more trouble because of Sissi's great Poison Resistance, but Trigger Finger Frenzy gives a chance to pump a lot of damage in.

Rangers, and sometimes mages with ranged spells, can be bothered by the little Broodlings getting in the way. Try to keep targeted on Sissirat and pump the damage into her. Shadow Lightning is a good spell to use because it will bounce to the little ones at the same time. Once she is dead, finish off Rattle Toe. Then you can pick off the remaining Broodlings and Venomspitters. This can be a task for a solo fighter as you will have to run all around the room to get them.

A group with varied spells can do very well here. Tank fighters can rush in and engage Rattle Toe, while mages and rangers stand back, ignore the broodlings, and go for Sissirat. Once the big guys are finished, the mages can use their AoE spells to take out the Broodlings and the rangers can pick off the Venomspitters.

Many groups of low level characters farm Sissirat with great success. Even at Formidable difficulty she will usually drop a purple or two, and at Insane you will get lots of purples and the occasional rainbow. Because you can go directly for the boss, it is easy to defeat her, grab loot, reset, and do it all over again. You will often see posts in the noob channel saying "Farming Sissi."
  • (Rough translation of the above. Hopefully YOU can contribute a better translation.) Well as you know Sissirat is the first real Boss, is a bit difficult but if you know how to take good advantage, you can do this low level. From level 10 you say that you can kill Sissi, you have the strength to kill her. Well, if you are a mage, use the TWO BUTTON MAGE, that's good. Well I recommend that you buy Poison Resistance. It is vital to have on the left mouse button Fire Bolt and on the right Shadow Lightning, first, kill the Whisker Venomspitters, because if you take lots of fire at the same time (translation??). Second, in this map there are two kinds of poison Whisker Broodling, the first that comes to Sissi from the beginning (I do not remember the name XD I think it starts with Frizzo something) and the other are those who Sissi spawns, get them with Shadow Lightning. Rattle Toe is like the guardian, kill him after taking care of the Venomspitters. When you are alone with Sissi, do as much damage as you can and use the Ring of Fire with Fire Bolt. Before all that use Poison Resistance (Logical XD), and to kill buy other poison skills. Not even a level 100 can avoid being beaten for speaking what you do not trust (translation??). Use Righteous Stomp, to remove posion Broodlings. and use a double health potion, so that it takes effect faster. You have to and it kills (translation??) -- ATM: Soul Reaver, YOUR ASSISTANT WITH EXP AND ITEMS
  • For fighters, Soul Rend, Butcher( It doesnt knock Sissirat down), Righteous Stomp, Poison Resistence and maybe Monster Bait are the best skills to use to defeat Sissirat and mob. For low levels the Blademaster champion should be the first to kill as he is easier than Sissirat and if you go for Sissirat first, the Blademaster champion will use knockback on you which tends to be annoying. - Bioman3wars

The Snow Chieftain Algor the Cold, Boss of Algor's Terror Dome

The Snow Chieftain Algor the Cold

Boss of:  Algor's Terror Dome
Spells:
  • Knockback Charge
  • Mortal Strike
Fire Resist:  No
Ice Resist:  Very High
Shadow Resist:  Low
Poison Resist:  Low
Divine Resist:  No

This is another Lair that has a corner where you can scout and activate your skills, especially Ice Resistance. Before getting to Algor himself, there are two groups to defeat. Each group consists of two Ice Orok Juggernaut champions and various fodder. A solo character needs to concentrate on one Juggernaut at a time, probably taking damage from both of them. Shadow spells work very well here, and Shadow Lightning will damage the Juggernauts and zap to the fodder at the same time. By the time the Champions are gone many of the fodder will be too! A fighter can be very effective here, standing up to the Juggernauts and using Butcher and Soul Rend to keep damaging them.

Again, with a balanced group, it works very well for the fighters to rush into melee while the mages and rangers stand back and blast away. It is vital to gang up on one target, instead of spreading your hits between the Boss and the Champions. Rangers may have acquired Monster Bait by the time they are ready for this Boss Lair, and it can be used to good effect.

After passing the two Champion groups you will see Algor standing on the hill, along with two more Juggernauts and fodder. This is a good time to re-activate Ice Resistance which should have cooled down by now. The best strategy is to try to take Algor out, while ignoring the two juggernauts. He moves around a lot and it may be difficult to keep targeting him because the Juggernauts will move in between you. His knockback skill is very strong and it can be hard to re-target him after you are knocked back. The same tactics used against the previous two groups work well.

A fairly new strategy, especially popular since the advent of the Bling Gnome, is for one fast character to draw all the groups down to the bottom of the hill, one group at a time. This way all the loot piles up in one big mass and the Gnome can grab it all at once. It is speculated that this increases the chance of the Bling Gnome producing a Mythic Item.

Farming this boss, usually called SC, is very popular with low mid-level characters. All of the Champions drop good loot and you can get purples before you ever get to the boss. Algor himself drops massive amounts of loot, which is why he is so good to farm.--Catwalksbyhimself 18:30, 20 June 2008 (CEST)

  • The following is a tactic to defeat the Snow Chieftain's knockback skill: After defeating the first two groups lure the Snow Chieftain down to the middle plateau. On either side of this plateau you will find a cliff wall. Run to the wall and wait for the Chieftain to come toe to toe with you and then engage him. With your back to the wall he will not be able use his knockback skill. Hopefully you will gain many benefits by using this tactic.-- "IamTHEEmystic"
  • If you're just starting out and having some difficulty with the damage he can do, you can split the final group up a little bit more to make it easier. If you kill the first two groups and are ready for the Snow Chief, then after you get their attention (aggro) them, run back to the begining of the level just inside the portal. The Snow Chief and a few of the fodder mobs will reset (turn into a ghost and go back to their spawn point) but the champions and most of the smaller mobs will still follow you and you can kill them, then head back for the Snow Chief and kill him and a few small mobs pretty easily.
  • (Approximate translation of the above. Hopefully YOU can contribute a better translation.) Soul Reaver MAGE TIPS --Hi all again, I'm here to help you kill this boss, it's a bit difficult but it has its tricks, I recommend being lvl 20 if you are wise. Take a good team this with you. If insane at close to 30 - 40 HP potions and mana 50 - 60. Why more mana than HP? Very simple, the skills that I recommend that you use are: Mouse left Shadow Lightning, Mouse right Crispy Critters,Ice Resistance, Acidic Blight, Monster Bait, Ring of Fire, others may be passive or optional to you, but I recommend these are vital against him. Well as you know the Crispy Critters is a new skill (well not so new) but recently, those who do not know, is like a stream of lava ejected the wizard, now here comes the consequences, this skill takes a lot of mana, requires a Creative Brainy mage or a sorcerer. there are three sets of monsters, so I understand there are three bases. After the first group, another group in the second and the third is the with Boss. First use Shadow Lightning near (the fodder) that spawn, when you see and come take them near the portal and kill him there, because if not the others are also coming and will be very difficult. Then use Acidic Blight, and The Two Button Mage but with Crispy Critters, this skill roasts anyone who is in the way. if you want to kill them faster Pyromania and finishes fast (translation??) so I recommend you leave it to the last Boss because the boss acquires more force (translation??). When in this group first kill the fodder, and then kill the big Boss, but one thing do not use the resistance before, only use it when you are at the Boss. Use Monster Bait in the second and the third much longer and that is a good trick. -- GREETINGS AND CHAO, ATM: YOUR ASSISTANT IN EXP AND ITEMS SOUL REAVER
  • I tend to use the skills Butcher, Soul Rend, Ring of Fire, Crispy Critters, Monster Bait and Righteous Stomp as they are EXTEMELY useful on defeating the ice champions and the mob. - Bioman3wars

Easy Snow Chief farming Guide (and best Gnome Skill usage!) Written by Aeiris

  • What I do when farming Snow Chief, is lure everything to the top platform! At the gate, preferably put up Blue Sceen of Life, and Spirit of the Hare. Then rush to the top platform, weaving between the mobs as to not get slowed down. When you get up to Algor, there is a nook on the left. Go up to it, use you're bait (as to not get damaged) and start attacking using an AoE skill such as Crispy Critters. When everything is killed, there is a pile of loot waiting to be eaten by your Gnome. Then pick up your purples, and occasional Rainbow. And get you're chests. Then reset and do it again!

Vergrim, Boss of Vergrim's Vexation

Vergrim

Boss of:  Vergrim's Vexation
Spells:
  • Divine Bolt
  • Summon Seer Brood
  • Seer Brood Sacrifice
  • Buff Guards
Fire Resist:  Good
Ice Resist:  No
Shadow Resist:  Low
Poison Resist:  Good
Divine Resist:  No

Vergrim is accompanied by Divine Demonspawn and Fire Whiskers. He can be difficult for a Ranger or Mage because two Fire Whisker Blademaster Champions surround you and keep you from getting a good shot at Vergrim as he floats around the room. It may be necessary to take out the Blademasters before you can go after Vergrim. A fighter will have to keep pursuing Vergrim as he floats around the room, and may find the Blademasters stepping in or the Seer Broods annoying you when they explode and knocks you back. Vergrim shoots out devastating bolts of Divine energy. At high difficulty he can one shot you. Divine Resistance will be helpful here, but it may run out before you get free of the Blademasters for a good shot at Vergrim. He is resistant to many elemental skills, especially fire, but shadow and ice work well against him. (See Vergrim Killer Mage)

A group based on fighters can be effective here, with the tank fighters engaging the Blademasters while the rangers and mages aim for Vergrim. This is not as popular a place for farming, probably because the boss is a bit tougher and the loot drops are not that great.--Catwalksbyhimself 18:39, 20 June 2008 (CEST)

  • I ALWAYS FOUND FIGHTING VEGRIM EASIER IF YOU LURE HIM BACK INTO THE NARROW HALLWAY WHERE YOU FIRST ENTER THE LAIR. He doesn't have as much room to get away - definitely easier for a fighter. - JERRYMIAH
  • I also find the Seer Brood AND the Blademaster champions extremely annoying when you try to attack Vergrim as they knock you down pretty tough so I generally kill the Blademasters first and try to kill Vergrim whilst avoiding the Seer Brood exploding. Divine Resistence is A MUST HAVE ESSENTIAL as Vergrim can K.O you with his divine blasts. - Bioman3wars

Widow Maker, Boss of The Widower's Nest

Widow Maker

Boss of:  The Widower's Nest
Spells:
  • Widow's Curse
  • Widower's Prison
  • Knockback charge
  • Summon Widower Hatchling
Fire Resist:  IMMUNE
Ice Resist:  Low
Shadow Resist:  Good
Poison Resist:  Low
Divine Resist:  No

On entering Widow Maker's Lair you will find a room full of Fade Skeletons. Rangers and fighters will have to pick them off one by one but a mage with a good AoE spell can go through them quickly. The Fade Generator Machines in the corners must be destroyed to open the barrier. They will generate more skeletons. It can be a bit tedious dealing with all of them and no significant loot drops.

Once the skeletons have been taken care of, you go down the stairs to a landing where you can refresh your skills and activate Fire Resistance. You can see Widow Maker at the bottom of the stairs, with more Fade Skeletons and also swarms of Ebon Hatchlings. Widow Maker periodically spawns a new brood of them.

This is another lair where it is vital to concentrate on the Boss. Fighters can do very well against Widow Maker as she is vulnerable to Divine damage. Focusing on her and using Soul Rend on your primary weapon is the best tactic. Righteous Stomp will seldom knock her back but will clear out the crowd of fodder around you. Solo Rangers and Mages are at a disadvantage here as she will close with them and do lots of damage with her claws and sting.

A group with a couple of strong fighters will take her out quickly. If they attract her attacks it gives the rangers and mages a chance to stand back and fire (the classic "meat shield" strategy!)

Farming Widow Maker is not too common. It wastes a lot of time dealing with the room full of Fade Skeletons who drop no significant loot, and there are no Champions to add any. All you get is what Widow Maker herself drops.--Catwalksbyhimself 18:53, 20 June 2008 (CEST)

  • I tend to use a LOT of divine skills on Widow Maker and if she uses the curse which stops your movement you can try AoE skills like Gaseous Blast and Righteous Stomp until you are released from the curse. The mob of Hatchlings are EXTREMELY annoying as they swarm over you as Widow Maker keeps producing them so AoE skills are essential. - Bioman3wars

Frump, Boss of Frump's Misfortune

Frump

Boss of:  Frump's Misfortune
Spells:
  • Enormous Knockback
Fire Resist:  Low
Ice Resist:
Shadow Resist:
Poison Resist:
Divine Resist:

After climbing two flights of stairs you will reach the antechamber of The Boardroom. Here you will find two barriers and a Fade Generator Machine. Destroying the machine releases the first barrier and a horde of Shadow and Ice mobs. The Hero is a large Dread Mantis, who actually is a mini-Boss. You must deal with the mobs, including the Shadow Fade Banshees, and dispatch the big bug. Doing this will release the other barrier and a similar Hero bug. The first bug is IMMUNE to Shadow, and the second is IMMUNE to Ice, but both take good damage from Fire attacks. Again this is a situation to concentrate on the big threats and clean up the fodder later. However, if you do not deal with the banshees quickly you may find yourself fleeing down the steps while the monsters follow. Some people who particularly hate banshees will go for them first.

Once you have dealt with these two threats, go up the stairs to The Boardroom. This contains a long table with five skeletons sitting there, who seem as if they should do something but never do. Behind the table is Frump himself. He is the only thing you need to deal with in this room. His attack is to move toward you slowly, and then deliver a very strong knockdown punch.

Solo fighters simply have to stand up to him, get knocked down, pick themselves up, and do it all over again. He does not do much damage, and perseverance will get him in the end. It may be a slow process. Rangers and mages should try to stay away from him and pump in the ranged damage. Fire works well against him. He will follow Monster Bait pretty regularly so it is a good skill to use here.

A balance group can use the usual tactics, fighters engage the big guy while the rangers and mages stand back and blast. Against the hordes in the antechamber, AoE spells such as Ring of Fire work well, but for a Shadow mage, remember one of the bugs is IMMUNE to Shadow so Shadow Lightning is not so useful here.

The big bugs used to drop good loot, but do not seem to drop much loot after Build 120. Frump himself will drop good loot. Some mid-level characters like to farm The Boardroom.--Catwalksbyhimself 19:19, 20 June 2008 (CEST)

Rotgut the Bloated, Boss of The Mutanous Malaise

Rotgut The Bloated

Boss of:  The Mutanous Malaise
Spells:
  • Knockdown Charge
  • Butcher
Fire Resist:  Low
Ice Resist:  Good
Shadow Resist:  Good
Poison Resist:  Good
Divine Resist:  Good

Upon entering The Room of Creation you can see the first contingent of Rotgut's guards ahead of you.  You must clean them up before going on.  Rotgut's Roadies are melee fighters and Rotgut's Groupies are ranged.  About the only way to do it is to charge for the Roadies, take them out, and then pick off the Groupies one by one.  A solo fighter will pick off the Roadies and then be running all around the room against the Groupies.  Using Butcher works well because it knocks them down and you can get in several attacks while they are down.  A solo Ranger or Mage will first be surrounded by the melee fighters, and after dispatching them it will basically be a stand and shoot gunfight with the Groupies.Lots of good loot will be dropped here.

You will have a chance to pick it up, and then re-buff your skills for the next fight.  At the end of the hall is Rotgut himself plus more guards.  Rotgut is big and slow in his wheelchair.  He will fire his machine gun, and then roll forward in the chair for a massive knockback.  He is an easy target and focusing on him will eventually wear him down. He is highly resistant to most spells, but fire is pretty effective against him and his guards.  Then you deal with the Roadies and Groupies just as in the entryway.  A group does very well here, as the fighters take out the Roadies and the rangers and mages take out the Groupies.

Once the Roadies are eliminated, it is a good idea for the fighters to just stand and watch.  If the fighters try to chase the ranged guards around the room, it is more difficult for the rangers and mages to target them. Some characters, especially rangers and mages with ranged spells, favor the tactic of heading immediately for a corner and putting their back to the wall for protection.  This usually means using Mouse View to get a bird's eye view of the room.  It can work very well.

Rotgut drops very good loot and the supporting Champions do too, so farming here is popular for mid-levels.  It is usually abbreviated as "Farm ROC."

See Pyromancer Toasting Rotgut for an effective Mage build.--Catwalksbyhimself 20:04, 20 June 2008 (CEST)

  • I Figured out a great trick and was able to defeat rotgut and farm him solo at a much lower level. Defeat the first set of Roadies and Groupies, at the first bookcase starting when you turn left up the hallway. Then go up to the large room with Rotgut and the other roadies and groupies , and run back down the hallway to the first large room where you fought the first bunch of foes. Rotgut may knock you down once, but continue to run back to the first open room. The roadies walk faster , so when they get to the last bookcase before that first room, they will disappear and go back to the large room they started in. If you stand back far enough, the groupies will also run into the same invisible wall and disappear. When that happens, run ahead and try to run past Rotgut before he disappears, then drop a MONSTER BAIT, and start wailing on him, you will fight him all by himself, and once you beat him, go back up and bring down the others. You may use the same tactic to separate the roadies from the groupies, and when you are all done , all of the loot will be piled up in one spot - which is just past the spot where the bad guys disappear and go back to their base. -- Jerrymiah
  • What I like to do is use Monster Bait a lot. Use it on the first group to give you some time without them hitting you , especially as mage or ranger. The get it ready for the second battle. Go to where rotgut and his group are and throw down monster bait. Retreat to between the first two bookcases , that you saw when coming in , wait there and as soon as the bait dies you should see the Groupies and Roadies coming your way minus RotGut. Destroy them then go on to RotGut. Distract him with Monster Bait every chance you get and you will have a lot easier fight. Must be close to him for it to work, both you and the bait.

Easy Farming for Room of Creation (and best gnome-item eating experience!) -Written by Aeiris

  • When you first enter Room of Creation you should see a group of Groupies and Roadies. Don't fight them when you first see them, instead move along the left wall until you come to a broken table, chair set-up. It's about the only nook in the entire room that you can lure everything to. Kill the first set of mobs here, at the table (using a bait to avoid damage). After the monsters are killed, don't use your gnome skill! Leave all the loot where it falls, then move on to Rotgut. Again, don't fight him where you first see him! Lure him back to where you had the first monsters. Focus all your damage on Rotgut first, seeing as he is annoying and can kill people with his annoying machine gun. After that, kill everything else. When everything is killed, it should all be in a nice pile. Meaning easier looting, and when you use the gnome skill everything will be picked up (except for Purples and Rainbows of course!). Leaving a chance for another bonus item! And if not, about 10k+ gold. Then move on to your chests.. and repeat for easy loot!

Abaddon, Boss of The Embercore Path

Abaddon

Boss of:  The Embercore Path
Spells:
  • Fireball
  • Hellfire
  • Flame Prison
  • Flammable
  • Resurrect Guards
Fire Resist:  IMMUNE
Ice Resist:  No
Shadow Resist:  Good
Poison Resist:  Low
Divine Resist:  No

The Cleft of the Searing Knight is an empty lava waste, and ahead you will see the Boss Abaddon and his Guards. There are normally three melee guards and one caster/healer. A usual tactic would be to take out the healer first. However, the Boss has the ability to resurrect them if they are killed. Consequently the most effective tactic here is to go right for Abaddon himself. He is very powerful and probably the hardest boss for a solo player to defeat. A fighter will have to stand toe-to-toe with Abaddon and take massive damage, while rangers and mages cannot get away and shoot at him because the guards will surround them. He is totally IMMUNE to fire, but ice attacks work well. Because he tends to stand in one place, Ray of Gosh is very effective against him.

Many players have found that after killing the healer two or three times she will not be resurrected again. They will work on destroying her repeatedly and when she finally is "most sincerely dead" then can go after Abaddon.

A well built group will have more success. Heavily armored fighters can serve as the classic "meat shields". Monster Bait may draw the guards off to allow ranger and mage attacks against them from a safe distance. A mage can concentrate on keeping the healer busy so she has less chance to heal Abby.

The loot drops here are pretty good but it takes a fairly high mid-level group to defeat him. Farming is only moderately productive for loot, but there are lots of characters who really hate him so you will frequently see groups formed to "go for Abby."--Catwalksbyhimself 20:04, 20 June 2008 (CEST)
