Boss-Exclusive Rainbow Farming
Boss-exclusive rainbows are the short named lists on a lair chest. They are not the shared mythic pile every boss corpse rolls. The lists are on Boss Lair Rainbows. The 1-in-N numbers this page scales are on Rainbow Drops.
This page is the farm math: loot percent, how many names are on that chest, who is high enough, and who actually bags the piece.

What you are farming
From Algernon on, the treasure room after the fight has a boss chest. That chest still rolls ordinary loot, including a slow shot at the shared mythic pile. On top of that it has a special about 1 in 180 (solo Normal) for one name from that lair's list.
When the special hits, the chest produces one named piece. The names on that list are equal. A three-name list means each name is one third of the hit. A one-name list (Frump, Queen of Shadows) means the hit is that item.
Rattle Tooth has no boss chest and no named list. HDoL bosses do not have their own unique rainbow names.
The Wishing Well can spit the same names. It does not use dungeon loot percent. That is a different roll.
The formula
Solo Normal is the baseline.
- Chance the chest hits the named list: 1 in 180.
- Chance it is one specific name on a list of N: 1 in (180 × N).
- Loot percent scales those 1-in-N numbers. Divide by (loot percent / 100).
- The piece then goes into party loot and is randomly divided. In a group of G eligible people, you have 1 in G to be the one who bags it.
So for you, personally, on a chest:
1 in (180 × N × G / (loot percent / 100)) for a specific name, if everyone in the group is high enough for that list.
For some name from the list, drop the N.
Loot percent
The monster tooltip shows a + percent. That is added to the base 100%. Five on Insane is +1150% on the popup and 1250% loot. The full table is on Difficulty.
Loot percent comes from difficulty and how many people are in the group. Character level does not change the percent.
| Group | Insane loot | Named-list hit (1 in 180) | One name on a 3-name list |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solo | 250% | about 1 in 72 | about 1 in 216 |
| 2 | 500% | about 1 in 36 | about 1 in 108 |
| 3 | 750% | about 1 in 24 | about 1 in 72 |
| 4 | 1000% | about 1 in 18 | about 1 in 54 |
| 5 | 1250% | about 1 in 14.4 | about 1 in 43.2 |
Those columns are the chest hit, not your personal bag chance. Party split is the next section.
Party split
One named hit is still one item. Loot is randomly divided among the group. Five people cannot each walk out of the same chest with a different boss-exclusive rainbow. There are not five rolls.
If five eligible people farm Insane:
- Chest hits some name: about 1 in 14.
- You are the one who bags that hit: 1 in 5.
- You get some name from that list: about 1 in 72.
- You get one specific name on a three-name list: about 1 in 216.
Level floors
The named chest roll will not fire below the character level on Boss Lair Rainbows. There is no maximum. The piece comes out at your level.
Everyone you want on that list should be at or above that floor. Extra bodies raise loot percent. They only help the named roll if they are actually eligible.
Mutant Mania / Manglefeet is the 80 line. A 50 is not on that list. A 100 is.
Worked examples
Solo Normal
Loot 100%. Named hit 1 in 180. On Manglefeet's three-name list a specific name is 1 in 540. You bag whatever hits because you are the only one there.
Five on Insane, all on the floor
The usual farm. Loot 1250%. Named hit about 1 in 14. A specific name on a three-name list about 1 in 43 on the chest. Each person about 1 in 72 for some name, 1 in 216 for one specific name.
Frump and the Queen are one-name lists. The 1-in-14 hit is that item. Personal bag chance is still about 1 in 72.
Four 50s and one 100, Insane, Manglefeet
Loot percent is still 1250%. Five people on Insane is five people on Insane.
The named Manglefeet roll starts at 80. The four 50s are under that floor. They are not who that list is for. Padding the group with people who cannot see the roll does not give you five personal 1-in-72 shots at the chair.
What you can say for sure:
- The chest special is still the 1-in-180 table, scaled by 1250% loot, so a hit is still about 1 in 14 if the roll is allowed to fire.
- A 50 is below 80. Do not count them as an eligible bagger for that list.
- One hit is still one item.
If you came here to farm Manglefeet's named list, bring people who are 80 or higher. The 50s belong on an earlier lair (Queen is 50, Balzack is 55) or they are there to clear the room, not to split chair odds five ways.
You want one specific name
Three-name lists (Sissirat, Algor, Vergrim, Widow Maker, Abaddon, Balzack, Ratsputin, Manglefeet): multiply the hit by 3.
Two-name lists (Rotgut): multiply by 2. Five on Insane that is about 1 in 29 on the chest, about 1 in 144 for you.
One-name lists (Frump, Queen): the hit is the item.
How many chests
These are averages for five eligible people on Insane, three-name list. Actual runs wander.
| You want | About this many chests |
|---|---|
| The chest to hit some name | 14 |
| The chest to hit one specific name | 43 |
| You personally to bag some name | 72 |
| You personally to bag one specific name | 216 |
After 72 chests you should have seen about five named pieces for the whole group, not five for you. The chance that you have bagged at least one by then is about 63%, not a sure thing.
Reset the instance, leave a Waypoint Compass in the lair. Same method as Farming.
What does not help
- Killing a different boss. Sissirat's corpse will not roll Manglefeet's list. That list is on Manglefeet's chest.
- HDoL. Hotter shared pile. No unique HDoL names.
- The Well, if you are trying to use Insane loot percent. It ignores that.
- People under the floor, if the point is that named list.
- Expecting five unique boss pieces from one chest. The special is one roll.
Shared-pool mythics on the corpse are a separate farm. Those odds and bands are on Rainbow Drops and Rainbow Level Bands.
