The Elements

There are five elements in the game : Poison, Fire, Ice, Shadow and Divine. A character can aquire skills which use the various elements for attack or defense. Although in the beginning of the game you may encounter some basic monsters without elemental attacks, very soon you will find that most monsters use an element, such as Poison Whiskers or Fire Mutants.

Usually the monster's name will tell you which element it uses. Some are changed a bit, but it is not hard to identify the element of Snow Wargs, Volcanic Fade Lich Lords or Toxic Whisker Venomspitters. A few are more obscure, such as Ebon Hatchlings or Embercore Angels. Check out the listings in The Monster Category for more details. Knowing which element a monster attacks with allows you to choose a proper resistance against it.

Elemental Damages

Most monsters are particularly susceptible to one of the elements. You can do a lot of extra damage by attacking with the right element. This is particularly useful for mages who can choose their spell, but it can be made use of by other classes too by selecting weapons and skills.

However, it is not as simple as it seems. One would think that all Fire mobs would be most damaged by Ice, and all Shadow mobs by Divine attacks, but it doesn't seem to work that way. Experience has shown that there is a complex set of relationships. This table shows which mobs have been found to take max damage from each element. This table is still developing and may need to be changed as more experience is contributed.

This seems to be a rather strange and complicated arrangement. However, it becomes clearer when you look at the various dungeons and see which monsters are found together. For example, Level 1 of The Widower's Nest contains Poison Whiskers and Divine Fades. You can see that both of them happen to be most damaged by FIRE attacks. A mage equipped with Poison and Divine Resistances and using FIRE spells can have a field day here! However, after The Embercore Path the problem becomes more complex, because the mix of mobs changes. Now, some are most damaged by the very element that others are resistant to!!

NOTE

NOTE that after this point, the best attack to use against one type of mob becomes the one other mobs in that dungeon are resistant to!! This makes it more difficult to choose an element for maximum effect.
