AUNReBO Sentinel

From Townstons

AUNRebo (Ah-oohn-Ree-Bow) is an acronym for All Unpopular Nether Region Breaks Out, which more or less describes the first few seconds of combat when this hybrid class is around. Taking the high damage base of the BSOL mage and making effective use of ranged AoE attacks, this Mage/Ranger can clear a room in a matter of seconds, regardless of the target(s) resistances. Designed for efficient soloing, makes a good team member since it incorporates the multi-target damage of a BSOL Mage with the straight line punch of a Ranger.

This build is recommended for Rangers re-speccing to Mage in the level 40-70 Range, or BSOL mages above 40 looking for a more efficient use of mana.

This build makes heavy use of Cold Snap, and Dungeon Inferno which aren't available until levels 40 and 50 respectively. You can do a similar build below 40, but it needs much more Endurance to be survivable.

Attributes

Like the BSOL mage, you'll be putting everything into Intellect. The BSOL mage suggests putting some points into Endurance, but you probably won't be needing it.

Equipment

Good Equipment in general is critical. You need to raise your Agility up to a respectable level to avoid missing too much. You really need to keep your eyes peeled for Golds and Purples early on, to jack that Agility up. You'll want to maintain it around (level*10/2). Everything else should focus on providing good resistances, and bolstering Intellect as much as possible. You might look for some basic Endurance boosting to prevent quick deaths, but the idea is not to get hit at all. Ranged Damage reflection is a nice perk, but don't cling to it too tightly.

  • Weapon: A good Bow or Gun is essential to success. Speed is not vital, since the main mode of attack will be based off Fire Shot and Shiver Shot, you'll want a gun or bow with an attack speed somewhere in the .4 range. Any faster than that and you end up with an extra normal bow shot in between your Fire Shot or Shiver Shot, which reduces your overall DPS. Too slow, and you'll be waiting between shots longer than you need to. Try for a weapon with a Normal, Fast, or Freakin' Fast attack speed, and you'll be getting the most DPS out of your magic based attacks. Look for Purples of the Yeti, since they will give big bonuses to Agility.
  • Armor: Any Body Armor works, you'll be looking for something light with a good bonus to movement. Any mage armor, or Ranger armor with a high bonus to Agility or Intellect would be preferred. Endurance is a plus, but again, you probably won't be needing it. Other armor bits should focus on bolstering Agility to the requisite minimum for keeping misses to a minimum, otherwise keep bringing that Intellect toward 1000.
  • Jewelry Again, look for items that keep your Agility and Intellect up. The tempation is to get Stacked Rings, but in reality you'll want rings the deliver some Endurance to prevent quickdeath, or offer high volumes of hit points.

Basic Skills

Offensive:

Image:Fire_Shot.jpgImage:Shiver_Shot.jpg Fire Shot or Shiver Shot Choose one appropriate to your environment. Because of your rediculous Intellect you can expect shocking amounts of elemental damage sprinkled with modest normal bow shots. This is great because in mixed environments, you're still getting in decent damage even if the monsters decide to go on resist sprees. Additionally, the Ranger element attacks have added bonuses, like the knock-down concussive blast of Fire Shot, and slowing effects of Shiver Shot.
Image:Dungeon inferno.jpgImage:Noxious-shot.jpg Dungeon Inferno or Noxious Shot Choose one on the right button. They both recharge quickly, and provide a wide area DoT effect to weaken your foes for when Fire Shot explodes. Dungeon Inferno's damage amplification effect further lays waste when Fire Shot ignites.
Image:Cold_snap.jpg Cold Snap The idea is to stack different DoTs on as many creatures as possible. Cold Snap adds another layer, and it's still ranged, so it trumps Gaseous Blast and Ring of Fire.

Buffs:

Image:Monster-bait.jpg Monster Bait Every good ranger needs to use this one as the first Buff. Essential. It keeps the beasties nicely clustered while all of your AoE effects suck away their will to live.
Image:Blue_Screen_of_Life.jpg Blue Screen of Life Never, ever, ever, let it crash if you want to live. Recast after every encounter. Never forget, lest ye die.

Passives:

If you're playing in normal in basic dungeons, you can sub in something else useful, but against bosses you'll need it.

If your bait seems to be holding up more than adequately, you might consider Barf-O-Rama instead to slow the monsters down a bit more and stack on some more poison damage. I'm tempted to not mention that Barf-O-Rama is hilarous to watch when it goes off, but I did anyway.

Additional Skills

Image:Righteous-stomp.jpg Righteous Stomp You don't want to get surrounded, this will help you get away. You could toss in another Ranged AoE to complete your cycle of pain.

But What About?...

Trigger Happy? You don't want to shoot too fast. Supposing you find a nice gun with high Agility and massive damage. Yes, Trigger Happy can help, but in general you won't need it.

Gym Freak? Dying too much is a pain. You can toss Gym Freak in there if you want. It'll slow your shots down. If your gun's too fast already, why not, eh?

Strategy

  • Solo one room at a time

Stay back, throw out the bait as far from the monsters as possible, but still close enough to get their attention. Lure as many of them to the meat as possible, and as few as possible to you. Then, Unleash All Unpopular Nether Region on the mutant freaks. Fire your Inferno first, it has to get in the middle to be most effective, follow immediately with Noxious Shot if you have it ready, finally Cold Snap since you don't have to have Line of Sight to the middle of the group with it. While the monsters are contemplating the true meaning of pain. Pump in the Fire or Shiver Shots, and pick off the healers if there are any. In a perfect world, you'll likely have dealt so much damage over a short period of time the bulk of the monsters in the room are now dead. If you have to flood the area with AoE's again, by all means do so. You'll have barely touched your mana after the first barrage.

If the bait goes down and the beasts are still coming, don't panic! Find a safe corner to prevent getting surrounded. Set off your AoEs right in front of you, and you should clear out the pack before they do any significant damage. Don't be afraid to get the unpopular nether region out of there either.

  • Solo pulling 3 or more rooms of MOBs

A favorite tactic of AoE and BSoL mages is to run through three or more rooms. Attracting the attention of as many beasts as they dare handle. This tactic works for the AUNReBO Sentinel as well. It uses up the pots a lot faster, but still not as fast as your mage counterparts.

Gather up as many MOBs as you can handle, duck into a corner and throw the bait out as far as you can manage. You want to do this so your AoEs go off far away from you. This way they affect as many freaks as possible, instead of being absorbed by the wall. Invariably, some of the mob will break off and attack you. Just stay alert, watch your health and mana, and pump arrows into the nearest ones. Throw the Cold Snap close to the meat to wear the dance party down. You'll stand alone in the corner soon enough, focus your arrows on the ranged attackers spread out around the perimeter, still using Cold Snap, and Inferno on the squirming mass around the meat.

  • Grouped

Spread your damage around. The monsters won't likely gather up on one person, so give each pocket of them some love. Use Shiver Shot to slow everything down if applicable. Save your Bait for when you aggro too many for you to handle, or when a teammate is getting owned. Try to keep your distance, but if you have to run; run to the nearest meat shield. Do not away from the battle. The beasts will likely divert their attention to the Fighter giving you time to unleash more Unpopular Nether Region, and mop them up.

Advantages and disadvantages

Advantages:

  • Huge damage totals for low mana costs. Your AoE's suck at the mana, but your basic attack uses barely any at all. Ideally, you should be using 0.75 mana pots per room of monsters on normal difficulty. You should barely ever have to slap the spacebar. That's less than one pot per encounter.
  • You have a excellent chance of staying away from the mobs and avoiding all damage.
  • No matter the group of monsters or their resistances, you have a weapon in your arsenal ready for their quick demise.
  • You don't need heavy armor so you can maintain mobility.

Disadvantages:

  • You are heavily dependent on equipment, and sometimes you'll have to stop and grind for loot to get what you need to move on.
  • You can be in trouble if you get surrounded.
  • You need an ever watchful eye on that BSoL.
